Wild Earth Pinot Gris 2019

$30.00 $25.50

This Pinot Gris has delicious poached pear, lime cordial and elderflower on the nose with a suggestion of salinity. A seductive and elegant wine with crunchy pear, citrus and apple flavours and a long mineral finish. Made with food pairing in mind, this Pinot Gris is deceptively complex and a good candidate for cellaring for up to 10 years

The Pinot Gris grapes that created this beautiful wine came from established vineyards in the Gibbston Valley (17-year-old vines) with 25% sourced from Lowburn. The 2018 – 2019 growing season returned to more classic conditions with warm (but not hot) days and cool nights. Yields were normal with minimal disease pressure and we had the benefit of the classic long hang time. The cool nights helped retain the perfect level of acidity for Pinot Gris.

Each block was harvested at optimal ripeness in April in order to achieve a wine with aromatic freshness, rich texture and restrained alcohol. A combination of stainless steel tanks (75%) and old French oak barrels (25%) were used for fermentation and settling before being bottled on October 2nd.

“Delightfully fruited and elegantly expressed, the inviting bouquet shows fresh pear, rockmelon, fig and floral aromas, followed by a gorgeously rounded palate displaying excellent weight and persistency. It’s wonderfully harmonious and flowing to a lengthy silky finish. At its best: now to 2024”.

“I like the mineral and sense of place in the bouquet and palate in this wine – fresh citrus and stone, green pear and apple. There’s a quiet seam of dried herb and gentle phenolic texture adding mouthfeel and depth. Dry in Grigio style with a balanced even palate of flavours and textures. Well made and ready to enjoy from today and through 2023”.

“Bright, pale straw-yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is fresh and accessible, aromas of stonefruit, pear, unfolding white lilies and ginger, along with some creamy lees details. Dry to taste, medium-bodied, the palate is fresh, nuances of succulent Nashi pear, apricot rushing in along with a touch of sherbet. A very clean mouthfeel with the purity of fruit enlivened by subtle ginger spices and lily blossoms. Fresh minerals and crunch supported by fresh acidity, flows effortlessly to a refreshing finish. Match with five-spice pork chop and fish cakes over the next 2-4 years. Fruit sourced from Gibbston 75%, Cromwell 25%, fermented and settling in stainless steel 75% and older oak barrels 25% to 13% alc. 18.5/20 pts Nov 2020”.

4 Stars, Winestate Magazine, Sept 2020
“Still unfolding, this 3:1 blend of Gibbston and Lowburn grapes was partly (25%) fermented in old French oak barrels. Pale lemon/green, it has strong, pear-like aromas and flavours, peachy and spicy notes, a distinct touch of complexity and a long, lively finish”.
