The Waitaki Valley in North Otago is renowned for its limestone rich soils which give great minerality and focus to the wines. The maritime climate makes the North Otago region different to the more highly planted semi- continental Central Otago region and the unique limestone rich soils result in wines with crunchy natural acidity and distinctive minerality.
The 2022-2023 growing season was a bit marginal with lots of wind in summer and cool temperatures in autumn; however, there was great weather at flowering resulting in a full yield with healthy grapes. It is often true that the more marginal seasons in the Waitaki deliver the most interesting wines.

The pristine Riesling grapes were hand harvested from a single vineyard near the Waitaki River on the 28th of April 2023. The grapes were whole bunch pressed to a stainless-steel tank for cold settling for two days. The juice was then racked and inoculated with selected German Riesling yeast and fermented at cool temperatures to retain the fresh aromatics. The fermentation was stopped at the perfect balance of residual sugar and acidity resulting in an off-dry wine with a long, dry, crisp, and mineral finish.

This wine is vegan.

“Nose isn’t giving very much. But palate = expressive. Strong salted lemon, citrus fruit. Chalky. Lots of concentration”.

“An excellent bouquet led by scents of fresh makrut lime and lemon then green apple and rose and white apricot. An off-dry wine on the palate with flavours of citrus fruits, apple and sherbet. Fleshy, crisp and salivating, you hardly notice the residual sweetness level because of the power surge of acidity. Delicious, fresh and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2034+”.

5 stars, 93 points, 18.5/20 – Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, Nov 2025
“Bright, even, pale yellow with a green hue. The nose is lifted with aromas of lime, apple and blossom. Medium-light bodied, off-dry to taste, aromas of lime, zest and apple have a taut core, entwined with blossom and a touch of saline. Crisp acidity flows with vibrancy along a mineral mouthfeel, lending a cleansing, appetising finish. Match with fish crudo and salami over the next 10 years. Fruit from a single vineyard near the Waitaki River, whole bunch pressed, fermented in stainless steel to 10.5% alc, 15.1 g/l RS. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts)”.

“Lime juice and zest make every sip of this medium dry Riesling sing with freshness. It has a medium body and long finish with bold fruity layers of flavour; think: white peach, nectarine and honey in a juicy, well balanced, succulent youth wine. it drinks well now and can age further for 10+ years”.
